Marketing to Make You Smoke.

Tagged Under : , , , ,

last oneImage by tigerplish via FlickrThe tobacco companies are masters of marketing.  They will target groups that they want to introduce to smoking by associating smoking with the things that those people will consider to be cool.

They sponsor major music events because they know that there will be impressionable teens at these events and they will associate that brand of cigarettes with the musician and all the glamour that goes with the musical lifestyle.

They create characters that represent the type of person that other people would like to be. An example of this is the Marlboro Man. Even cartoon characters like Joe Camel are targeting people who associate that brand of cigarettes with all that is cool including money, excitement, fun and success.

Tobacco companies paint a picture with their advertising and offer people the dream of being part of that fantasy simply by smoking their cigarettes.

They are obliged by law to display warnings of the health hazards that are caused by smoking but counter them with massive advertising campaigns to overshadow those hazards with illusions of a better life.

Even sports events are sponsored by tobacco companies and when tobacco advertising is banned from specific sports they find loopholes to allow them to continue getting their message across or move on to other areas where they can still influence the same target market.

There is so much tobacco advertising all around us that sometimes we are unaware of how much we are exposed to it.

Even through the use of the motion picture industry, the tobacco companies get the benefit of promoting their products to massive markets when the action hero or other main movie characters are seen to be smoking.

Often the advertising is very subtle but it is always highly effective. Big money is spent on branding so even when the company names aren’t allowed to be advertised due to regulations the branded colors and graphics that are familiar to many people are still to be seen where required to maintain their presence in the marketplace.

Quit Smoking & Getting the Support You Need

Tagged Under : ,

A 'No Smoking' signImage via WikipediaThe support of your friends and family can have a huge bearing on your ability to finally kick the habit of smoking.

There will most certainly be times during the process of giving up smoking when you will get the urge to have a smoke or feel that the pain of giving up is too difficult and the support of others will help you to get through those times.

Even the support of workmates can influence your chances of success.

There are many quit smoking support groups and centers throughout the country and these can make the difference between success and failure. In addition to offering the social support that can help you to achieve your goals they will have extensive information that can help with the decisions you make towards quitting.

You will also be meeting with other people in a similar situation to yours and this will help with the understanding of the problems that you will be faced with while trying to give up smoking.

Most of these support groups will offer structured programs that can be followed and they will usually have specific starting times when each individual group will stop smoking together and work towards permanently quitting.

By working with a team of others the results and chances of success have been shown to increase quite considerably.

Joining a group also sets a specific starting point in your program and when you feel you might consider giving up you will have the support of others and the predetermined meeting times that help to add some structure to your program and an incentive to continue.

The best of the support groups understand the problems that people have when trying to quit and no matter what problems you might be having they will be able to help.

Support groups are also ideal for people who don’t have friends and family to offer them the support that is needed.

Slipups And Falling Off The Track To Quitting

Tagged Under : ,

The cigarette is the most common method of smo...Image via WikipediaSlipups are commonplace for most people who try to quit smoking. Statistics show that most people will try to quit smoking four to five times before they are successful.

This doesn’t mean that you should accept you will fail the first few times if you haven’t already tried. This information is worthwhile for you to know if you have made other attempts and failed as you can be assured that even with the prior slipups you can succeed as many other people have already done.

Any time that you relapse and start smoking again you will have learnt something. You will know what happened to cause you to start smoking again and this will strengthen your position to finally succeed the next time you try.

If you have a slip up and have a cigarette when you are trying to quit the first thing you need to do is immediately remove any forms of temptation so it won’t happen again. A slip up doesn’t mean that you will begin smoking again if you get back onto your program and don’t have any more cigarettes. Avoid the situation that caused the problem and if necessary avoid the person or people that encouraged you to have that smoke.

Maybe there are some other issues in your life that need attention such as reducing some emotional problems or stress that is a precursor for you to have a cigarette.

Maybe the process of quitting has made you feel somewhat depressed and you thought a cigarette would help you to cope with the situation when other alternatives would have given you the lift you needed.

Now might be a good time to add something else to your life that will help you to act and think more positively and reduce your dependence on cigarettes. Consider a fitness program to help release the endorphins that will make you feel as good as the cigarettes have been doing.

Maybe this will be a sign that other aspects of your life are where the real problem lies and lifestyle choices such as socializing and alcohol consumption might need to be curbed a little to get more of a balance in your life where you no longer feel the need for cigarettes.

These slipups can be turned around and used as steps to bigger things including quitting smoking and being able to have more control over more aspects of your life.

How do you break a habit?

Tagged Under : , , ,

Unlit filtered cigarettesImage via WikipediaThe first step is to accept that you have a habit and then look at the reasons why you have that habit.

If you know the reasons you can then think of better ways to deal with those reasons.

The reason why you started smoking might not be the reason why you continue to smoke so you will need to look at your current situation and look at the things that make you want to smoke.

Large portions of the people who take up smoking do so to be accepted by others. After smoking for some time on a regular basis and with the added evil of the addictive nature of nicotine the original reason might have little bearing on the reason why you continue to smoke.

It might be that you now find some comfort in having a smoke or it makes you feel great when you have a smoke.

The next time you pick up a cigarette to smoke think about the things that made you want to light up.

Was it something that happened (and this can even be a particular time of the day such as breakfast)

Was it something that someone else said or did? Did you get upset or angry and feel the need for a cigarette?

You need to be honest and answer the questions before you can break the habit. Smoking is a habit and you can’t hope to quit if you don’t know what the habit is. It is no use simply saying that smoking is the habit as there are almost always triggers that stimulate the need for the next cigarette.

One of the best ways to break the habit is to refrain from smoking when you are faced with the situations or emotions that would normally cause you to smoke. Even if you delay the reaction to these events initially and wait a few minutes before having the smoke you will be going some way to breaking the habit. You will begin to gain back some of the control in your life that you lose each time you feel the need to smoke.

By separating the action of smoking from the event that usually causes the desire to smoke will break the smoking habit.

Quit Smoking, A Plan That Will Work

Tagged Under : ,

Camel Collector’s Pack,1918Image via WikipediaQuitting smoking is just like anything else that you would like to succeed at in life. You need a plan to follow and you need to do some planning beforehand to ensure than you can manage and succeed with the plan.

This involves making the process of not having a smoke easier to follow.

Obviously one of the first steps that you will need to take is to remove all possibilities of having access to cigarettes from the day you start your program. You need to get rid of all the cigarettes you have in your possession.

Many people like to retain one pack of cigarettes as something to fall back on ‘just in case they need one’ but this is setting yourself up for failure before you start. here needs to be no thoughts in your mind that you will even need another cigarette.

I have a couple of friends that quit smoking all the time. I think they do it because it makes for a good party but then they get loaded and give in the very next day because of their killer hangovers. You need a new plan guys.

As much as their heads hurt they are willing to walk a mile for a Camel, as the saying goes.

You should have also worked out what causes you to want to have a cigarette and be ready to avoid such circumstances or the possibility of such emotions when you start your process to stop smoking.

Avoid anything that will make you feel like having a cigarette and make arrangements to do things that will keep you occupied and help you to keep your mind off the cravings that are bound to happen.

Do things that will change your regular routines as this will help to break the habits that cause you to smoke.

Arrange to be with people who can offer you support and try to avoid those who are smokers as this can lead to unnecessary temptation. In the initial stages of your program you won’t want these temptations and socializing with certain people will need to be postponed until you are in a position where you can handle having them around without feeling the need to have a cigarette of your own.

Anything that you can do to make your life easier during this period will help you to get the results that you are after and ensure that you will be able to finally quit for good.

Motivation is the Key

Tagged Under : ,

A 21mg dose Nicoderm CQ patch applied to the l...Image via WikipediaNo matter what type of program you use to kick the smoking habit is isn’t going to happen unless you have the motivation to succeed.

A larger portion of the people who try to quit smoking do so because they know it is bad for their health but they really don’t have the right mindset to succeed. They really don’t want to stop because the addiction makes them feel good and almost everyone knows that quitting smoking is not something that is easy to do.

People will always seek pleasure and avoid pain and all quitting offers initially is more pain than pleasure. If only those same people could understand the potential for pain that they will suffer if they continue to smoke and get the health problems such as lung cancer that are associated with smoking.

The chance of successfully quitting smoking is considerably more if you have the desire to quit and the motivation to do so.

Before you even consider starting a program to stop smoking you should be concentrating on getting your plan in place and getting motivated to start and follow through. If you aren’t ready to do that then it is probably better to delay for a very short while until you really are ready as then you will have a chance of success.

Set a specific date when you will start and let others know that is what you are doing so you can also get some support structure in place before you start. It might even be worthwhile to tell friends and family that you might be a little bit grumpy around that time and you can apologize in advance and ask them to understand it is something that is very difficult to do.

By setting a specific date and creating your plan of action you are affirming in your mind the course that you will follow. Even powerful mind techniques like hypnosis that have proven to be highly effective at stopping people from smoking will have little chance of success if you don’t want to stop.

You have to have the desire and the motivation. With those two you will have a very powerful force against the evil of tobacco smoking.

Long Term Health Goals

Tagged Under : ,

i quit!Image by stallio via FlickrOne of the problems that many people encounter after they quit smoking is the fact that they believe they will never smoke again and this feeling gives them the security to feel comfortable to have the occasional puff.

It comes as quite a surprise to find that even after a very long time there are receptors in the brain that are only too willing to react to the nicotine like it was yesterday and for many people this can result in a relapse to their previous habit all too soon.

It is simply not worth the risk to let this happen again after all you went through to get off the habit in the first place.

You will be risking all the repair work to your health and within minutes of taking that puff you could be headed back to the addiction of the previous habit.

Smoking habits all start with one puff and that’s how it all started for you in the first place.
It will happen more easily the second time because the receptors are there and they are always ready to invite back the nicotine.

There is no reason to prove to yourself or anyone else that you can have a smoke and not fall back into your old ways. You should remember the addictive power of nicotine and the fact that no one is safe to ‘test’ it without setting themselves up for disaster.

Consider yourself lucky to have managed to quit when so many are trying everyday to do the same. Your health will have been improving from the minute you quit and will continue to do so. For many people their long term health outlook will be as good as they would have expected had they never smoked at all.

Rather than having another test to prove something you will be better working at goals to improve your overall health on a daily basis with good lifestyle choices, good nutrition and sufficient exercise to maintain that good health into old age.

Managing Stress

Tagged Under :

Niedopalek papierosaImage via WikipediaA large percentage of people who smoke will do so in times of stress. Some people will use cigarettes to help them manage their stress and most people will tend to smoke more cigarettes during times of stress.

The reason for this is because the nicotine in the cigarettes helps to change your mood and when faced with a stressful situation people will always look for the easiest solution to relieve that stress or at least some of it.

There is another factor where smoking can help people to cope with stress and that is by allowing them to focus on something other than the stress for a short while when they first encounter it by taking time out to light up a cigarette. Often this is done away from the stressful situation where people will walk outside to have a smoke giving them an excuse to withdraw from the situation at hand.

Anything that you can do to eliminate or manage your stress levels will help you to smoke less and also help you to quit smoking and not revert back to it when faced again with stress.

There are better ways at handling stress than smoking cigarettes and learning good stress management skills will help in many more areas of your life so it is well worth looking at the alternatives.

Exercise is one of the best forms of stress management as it has the added benefits of improving your health and managing weight.

Yoga and meditation are regarded as two of the best forms of stress management and they can both help to gain a healthy balance in life that will also assist in quitting smoking.

If there are recurring stress problems in your life then you really need to address these at the source and see if you can resolve the issues that are causing the stress. It is always better to eliminate the stress rather than find ways to help deal with it.

Have You Become Addicted To Smoking?

Tagged Under :

I took this photograph and I release it to the...Image via WikipediaMost people won’t admit that they are addicted to smoking but acceptance of this addiction can help many to quit the habit sooner rather than later. You see there are three main components to the addiction of smoking and the first one of these is habit.

Humans are very habitual beings and once we do something over and over again it becomes a habit and habits are very difficult to break. A habit will usually have a strong physical and psychological component and these are the other two components that make up the addiction of smoking.

You might say that you can give up smoking but have you tried and if you have did it work or are you still smoking?
The reason that these questions need to be asked is because most people who have tried to quit will assume that they are a failure if they succumbed to the habit once again.

People who haven’t smoked usually can’t understand why someone who wants to stop hasn’t done so and continues to spend considerable amounts of money on something that they no longer enjoy and would like to stop.

Blaming yourself for this ‘failure’ won’t help the situation and it can cause some people to give up trying where the real problem lies in the cigarettes and not the person or their strength and willpower.

The fact that nicotine is so addictive is the real reason and even those people with incredible will power can struggle to stop.

You need to be ready to stop smoking and you need to believe that you want to stop and can stop.

You need to look for alternative methods for getting the same ‘fix’ that the cigarettes are giving you and you need to understand that smoking is a habit and only by addressing the habit and the emotions and situations that trigger the habit will you be able to finally quit.

It is not you that is stopping you from quitting. It is what the nicotine has done to you that has made it so difficult. Don’t blame yourself for the difficulty of quitting. Instead focus your attention on the habits that have been created and when these are addressed you will be one more step closer to quitting smoking for good.
